Pain Relief With the iovera° System
Managing pain is key to getting patients back on their feet and recovering from osteoarthritis knee pain or after total knee replacement surgery. Aiken Regional Medical Centers uses the iovera° system, an innovative way to treat pain using focused cold therapy, or cryoneurolysis.
Everyone is familiar with the idea of using cold for pain relief, but iovera° uses cold like no other therapy. It is a clinically proven, non-opioid, pain management solution that uses the body’s natural response to cold to relieve pain. The handheld device uses a small needle to deliver precise controlled doses of cold directly to targeted nerves, which immediately stops pain signals from being transmitted to the brain. All of this is done without the use of drugs or medication.
The procedure is complete when the targeted nerves causing your pain are blocked. Unlike other treatments, iovera° does not permanently damage the nerve or surrounding tissue.
The iovera° treatment is administered by the anesthesia department during an outpatient procedure and takes approximately 45 minutes.
