Nuclear Cardiology Lab

The Cardiovascular Imaging Center of Aiken has a nuclear cardiology lab that has been accredited by IAC since February, 2011. Services offered are described below.

Stress Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (SPECT)

This test is for the detection of coronary artery disease. Patients are administered an IV and a small amount of a radioactive isotope followed by imaging. The patient then exercises and receives another injection of the same radioactive isotope. This exam provides evaluation of the blood flow to the heart muscle and evaluates heart function. Patients unable to walk on a treadmill can receive a medication such as Lexiscan® (Regadenoson), which simulates exercise and replaces the treadmill portion of the stress test. This test is completed in one day usually between one and a half to two and a half hours.

Thallium Viability Imaging

Myocardial Perfusion Imaging is used for the detection of myocardial viability. Patients are administered a radioactive isotope (Thallium) followed by imaging. Delay images are acquired four hours later with the option for a 24-hour delay image if the physician deems necessary.

Spectrum Dynamics D-Spect

This has nine solid state detectors that each move independently, which allows for faster scan times and collection of more data in a shorter time. It also features an upright imaging chair for better patient comfort. The chair can convert to a flat stretcher if needed.
