We Are Living HOPE

Carolyn Cook

"I love offering hope, encouragement, and compassion to our breast patients. Sometimes these patients receive bad news and are overwhelmed trying to take in everything. The opportunity to be there for them and their family members is such a blessing."

We Are Living HOPE: Buffy Zorn

I was diagnosed at 32, six months after having my fifth child. I found the lump doing a self-breast exam and waited two weeks to have a mammogram. I went to the Women's LifeCare Diagnostic Services at Aiken Regional Medical Centers and had a mammogram. I had a biopsy and saw my surgeon, Dr. A. Jill Buchanan, the same day.

We Are Living HOPE: Kathy Verenes

I was diagnosed on July 9, 2009. I went for my annual gynecological and mammogram with Dr. Cindy Besson. As she was doing a breast exam she felt a small lump and thought we should do an ultrasound. Sure enough, the ultrasound revealed a small lump in my right breast. SHE told me she wanted me to see a general surgeon for a consultation. She asked if I had a preference and I told her Dr. Wayne Frei. She called Dr.

On the Wednesday before Good Friday in 2011 I had a mammogram. On the following Monday, I received a call from Dr. Cindy Besson's office and her staff said that I needed to see a surgeon immediately. She asked me which surgeon I wanted to see. Without hesitation I requested Dr. Wayne Frei. I went to Dr. Frei’s office the next day. He showed me the X-rays and it looked like a “star burst” scattered all over my left breast.
